Education Bridges Between Istanbul and New York Are Established

Under educational visits in New York, Bahçeşehir University’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Enver Yücel, met with the Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, Dennis M. Walcott. During the meeting, co-educational studies and comparative educational research which can be made in New York and Istanbul were evaluated.

In the meeting held at the Department of Education in City Hall, developments in the field of education in Istanbul and Turkey were discussed and, in particular, information about the education system in New York was acquired. Chairman Yücel, by specifying the need for joint work in terms of education in the world and sharing successful examples, highlighted the importance of making educational research with the BAU Faculty of Education.

Chancellor Walcott, indicating that there are 1700 schools and more than one million students in New York City, underlining which is a budget of $23 billion, highlighted the challenges of education in major cities. Stating that 180 different language programs are taught in New York City’s Schools, Chancellor Walcott said that his biggest desire is to resolve the level difference between schools.

Chancellor Walcott, in expressing that in New York elite schools are make an examination selection and eight of these schools are in the area, said “besides the eight elite schools in New York City, there are schools with a special examination for gifted students who are 4 and 5 years old. There are elite schools giving special education in every country in the world. These schools have no choice other than to make an examination to select their students. In addition, other examination results made statewide are quite effective in the evaluation of teachers and schools performance.”
Chancellor Walcott stated that he would be very grateful to visit Istanbul and Bahçeşehir University while expressing his pleasure at meeting the Chairman of the Board, Enver Yücel.

Enver Yücel was born in 1957 in Giresun and he studied at Hayarpaşa High School that was a boarding school. After he graduated from the Mathematics Department of the Atatürk Education Institute at Marmara University, which is now known as the Marmara University Faculty of Education.
